What we do

This organisation, World Basic Income, exists to campaign for the introduction of a universal and unconditional basic income, provided regularly to every person in the world, to spend as they see fit. We work to:

Research and articulate the vision

World basic income is an emerging idea, and further exploration of every aspect of it is needed. Lessons from cash transfer programmes, national welfare schemes and basic income pilots, as well as from tax justice organisations and global social movements, need to be pulled together, analysed, and used to articulate a detailed set of options for implementing basic income at a world scale.

Initiate basic income pilot schemes

Basic income pilots to date have tended to be small (but successful), while larger schemes have used somewhat different models (i.e. involving conditions, targeting certain groups). Major pilot schemes are needed, ideally at a whole-country or several country level, and most especially in countries struggling with extreme poverty. This will enable the benefits and challenges to be more thoroughly understood, will provide an evidence base to support further extension, and will publicise the idea of basic income to communities at the grassroots.

Build the momentum towards establishing a World Basic Income

Basic income, especially at a world scale, is not yet a widespread idea – we intend to change that. By working proactively with civil society groups, social movements, trade unions, education and research bodies, political parties, national and international organisations, governments and other networks all over the world, we will show people how they and their communities could benefit from world basic income, and invite them to be part of the movement to bring it about.

World Basic Income is a young organisation, created in summer 2016, so these activities are still developing. Please consider getting involved or supporting us - your help will make a real difference.
